Aims and Objectives of the Programme
Programme Aims
Supply chain management (SCM) is concerned with the optimization
of resources of firms in a logistics network that delivers value to
end customers. Since Hong Kong is a logistical/trading centre of
global importance, SCM is of particular relevance to many of our
businesses and industries. To transform into a world-class
operations, trading and transportation hub, it is essential for
organizations in Hong Kong to strive for enhanced value-adding
capabilities through efficient and cost-effective management of
logistics and inter-organizational relationships.
Modern technology and commercial practices in the logistics/SCM
related industries demand that the graduate personnel needed should
be unique, capable of functioning within management teams which
collectively have the ability to understand and critically analyze
the following key parameters:
1) The nature of, the distribution of, and the demand for flows
of physical goods, within the legal framework of national and
international law;
2) The management of the logistical flows of
goods from both technical and commercial aspects, encompassing
different parties in the supply chain associated with different
intermodal infrastructures;
3) The management and operations of
the global supply chain, combined with the current practices in
logistics and distribution management;
4) The effective and
efficient management of the flows of goods and the chain
relationships in the global supply chain, and the recognition of the
economic development of the neighboring regions and the global
environmental conditions in which the supply chain activities are
performed;
5) The management and organization of resources and
relations in the global supply chain, and in particular those
multinationals operating in different cultures;
6) Management
techniques, both strategic and integrative, for supply chain design
and operations, and in conjunction with the ability to undertake
research in logistics/SCM related areas.
The MSc in Global Supply Chain Management aims at producing
graduates who can meet current and future needs in the profession of
supply chain management. This programme equips graduates with
knowledge and skills in operations management, information
technology, cross-functional management, international business, as
well as transport logistics that are useful for business
organizations to create and to sustain competitiveness in the supply
chain with respect to cost, quality and efficient customer
response.
The programme aims to provide students with skills and knowledge
in three areas:
1) Logistics/SCM: Students will learn contemporary knowledge and
skills in logistics and supply chain management.
2) Management:
Students will acquire business skills, and a thorough grounding in
management theory and practice. The development of quantitative
skills and exposure to the global business environment will be a
particular feature.
3) Integration of knowledge and skills in
logistics/SCM, business and management: Students will gain expertise
in the application of business and management skills in the solution
of SCM problems, learning to scrutinize each activity along the
entire chain of value, from raw materials acquisition to the
ultimate disposal of the products, and integrating them together in
order to reduce lead time, add value, cut cost, and increase
customer satisfaction.
